American Idol makes a comeback

After much talk about a possible return, the show finally returned on Sunday, March 11, 2018. It changed a few things, including its judging panel and the concept fans were familiar with.

Host of the show, Ryan Seacrest, assured skeptics that the popular music show was still very serious about introducing the world to breakout talents. The last few seasons before it was finally taken off air were particularly dry spells that introduced Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson to the world.

At the Television Critics Association's winter press tour, Seacrest said:

The legacy of this franchise is important to me and to its fans.

Judges, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan, were just as sold on the vision as Seacrest.

The woman behind the show, Trish Kinane, also made it clear that American Idol was past its days of mocking bad singers for ratings. She said:

We want the humor, but we don't want the exploitation.

Fans are not buying it

So, with all these great plans, why are people not hyped about its return? Well, most of them do not think the show should have returned if it was scrapping the entertainment provided by bad singers.

Also, viewers are not feeling the quality of judges:

Fans consider a judging panel, including Katy Perry and Luke Bryan unserious, even with Lionel Richie in the mix.

It still has its cheerleaders

In spite of its less than desirable reception, the Sunday premiere was a success. 94% of its original audience returned to keep up with the show.

This is a big deal when you consider that Fox ran its O.J. Simpson Special at the same time the show was making its comeback.

Clearly, the critics are more, but the show still has its cheerleaders. Although, two past winners have gone on to be coaches on rival singing competition, The Voice, a few people consider American Idol a more superior show.
